The Visual Bridge

On the street he is not gawking to claim you. He is trying to see you.

You pass a man you like. Your glance is already done. He is still holding a central look — the visual bridge his brain needs in order to feel seen, and to feel allowed to approach. When that bridge drops, approach motivation shuts down. He reads rejection. You read a stare.

What the science is doing

• Stereopsis (depth) only works in the overlapping central field — the origin of a firm, held look.
• Cortical magnification enlarges that centre in the male early visual cortex and blurs the rest.
• The mirror neuron system copies the look-away. The default mode network asks: what would this mean if I did that?
• Lateral orbitofrontal cortex tags non-reward; the right inferior frontal gyrus can cancel movement.
